Language:

Why do you need SSL?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protocol create a unique encrypted channel for private communications over the Internet. Sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, becomes encrypted up to 256-bits to help prevent a brute force attack and for the information - and potentially the identity - to be stolen. SSL certificates offer protection to prevent sensitive information from being stolen.

VeriSign - GeoTrust - SBS.

Why only up to 256-bits?

Currently, 256-bits is the highest level of SSL security available. Any brute force attack on an SSL with 256-bit encryption would require not only tools, time and motiviation to attack, but also about a trillion years to break into a session with an SGC-enabled certificate.

How do you know a site has an SSL certificate?

The easiest way to see if any site (including Immortal Design) has an SSL certificate is to check if there is a closed padlock by the URL in the browser window. You can also see if the company has a "trust mark" (such as VeriSign's Trust Seal), a green address bar at the top, or is preceeded by an "https" rather than an "http". Any of these suffice as a form of SSL identification.

Who needs SSL?

There are several types of companies and individuals that require an SSL certificate.

  • Any online store or company that accepts online orders and credit card information
  • Any company or individual that values the client's privacy and expect the client to trust the company
  • Any company or individual that needs to comply with security and privacy requirements
  • Any company or individual that offers a sensitive sign-in or login to the site
  • Any company or individual that processes sensitive data and information, such as ID numbers, licenses, social security, etc.

How many SSL types are out there?

There are several top companies available that provide the leading SSL certification. Among the top 3 are VeriSign, GeoTrust, and SBS.
